Marguerite Miller at the 2022 installation of Rhapsody in Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park at the Josephine Butler Parks Center, Washington, DC

In 1994, Marguerite Miller’s interest in public parks in Washington, DC, initiated her intensive studies and culminated in her 1998 MFA thesis show at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her highly saturated, grand-scale series of watercolor paintings of DC and Baltimore public parks have also been displayed at the Dance Place Gallery, Josephine Butler Parks Center, Washington, DC, and the Mill River Gallery, Ellicott City, Maryland.

During Marguerite’s undergraduate study with Arnold Bittleman at Skidmore College, the act of drawing became the foundation of her painting process. Later, she studied non-violent social change with Dr. Bernard Lafayette at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Institute on Nonviolence in Dallas, Texas. Influenced by this experience, she donated a series of drawings on deadly force to the Dallas Police Community Task Force in 1987.

After providing 46 years of art instruction for grade-school students, including at The Darrow School in New Lebanon, New York, Green Hill School in Dallas, Latin School of Chicago, and Washington Episcopal School, Marguerite works in her home Studio Sfumato in Reston, Virginia. Her commissioned paintings are in businesses, institutions, and homes in the greater DC region.
